Asian Cuisine: The Champion of India’s Food Delivery Scene

A decade ago, the food scene in India was very different. Eating outside was an elaborate, often celebratory affair – with people dressing up, navigating infamous traffic, and reaching the restaurant only to have to wait for a table. Ordering in was a rarity, and the notion of ordering food online would have seemed alien and quite rightly futuristic to most people.

Online food delivery takes India by storm!

Thankfully, times have changed and the landscape of online food delivery has evolved to such an extent that we can now press a few buttons on an app and get piping hot food, within minutes! It makes it easier for those of us who’d rather stay in and indulge in a delicious, gourmet meal, right in the comfort of our homes (and even eat in our pyjamas if we’d like!). Evidently, the Indian online food delivery industry reflects this preference, seeing tremendous growth at a rate of 150% in 2016 (according to research firm RedSeer). Moreover, the industry is geared to expand at a more rapid pace than the global average, in the next 4 years alone!

Today, several third-party companies and restaurants are doing brisk business with their food delivery apps. Many youngsters in big cities find themselves surfing the web for “food home delivery near me”, late at night and on weekends. It’s also common to see employees of  multinational conglomerates place an online snacks order in Bangalore for their meetings. In fact, a whopping 80% of the traffic is from people who order online food in Bangalore, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, and Hyderabad.

 What food does India like?

In the era of a booming food service industry, it is intriguing to know what the nation craves for. A recent survey suggests that biryani is the most relished nationwide delicacy. The sinful Death By Chocolate dessert is the most popular home delivery food in Bangalore, while Chicken 65 is savored most in Hyderabad. Delhiites thrive on seafood, whereas street food such as chaat and vada pav are most ordered by hungry Mumbaikars. Surprisingly, a fondness for North Indian dishes is seen in Chennai!

Future trends

India is a burgeoning market for a variety of palates and wallets, ranging from Italian and Mexican to Vietnamese, Korean and Japanese. This is probably because we Indians have always been an experimental lot! In this kaleidoscope of cuisines, Asian food – with its satays, sushi, dim sums, and dumplings – is ruling the market. And the trend doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon!
